Sunday, April 27th was a day of profound joy for a group of young people from different localities in the south of Chile — Coyhaique, Parral, Retiro, Piguchen and Santa Adriana — who, after a process of preparation sustained over time, received the sacrament of Confirmation.
Sr. Ma. Gabriela Valenzuela, from Santiago, virtually accompanied these young people on their journey of faith, responding to the request of the parish priest of Retiro (commune of the province of Linares). For several months, every Monday at 21:30, after their study or work days, these young people connected to receive their catechetical formation online. The process began with the preparation for First Communion and culminated this Sunday with the celebration of Confirmation.
“It was a very exciting celebration, especially because of the perseverance of the young people, who gave their best at every meeting”" comments Sr. Gabriela. “It was also a challenge for me, because I had never given catechesis in virtual mode. I had to learn new ways to accompany, and I am deeply grateful to my community that encouraged me during this time."
The process also included some face-to-face meetings, and was especially appreciated by Monsignor Tomislav Koljatic Maroevic, Bishop of the Diocese of Linares, who presided over the celebration of the sacrament and shared his excitement at seeing the active and committed participation of young people.
The experience didn't end there. On the same Sunday evening, Monsignor Koljatic wanted to have a new meeting, this time virtual, with all the confirmed. "He wanted to know about his experience, and the young people expressed their gratitude to him for his closeness. They felt heard and recognized by their Pastor”" Sr. Gabriela. At the same meeting, the Bishop invited them to continue this journey of faith, proposing to meet once a month to continue deepening in prayer and Christian formation.
This witness of faith, perseverance and commitment is a sign of hope for our Church. As a consolation, we are glad to accompany these processes and to see how the Spirit continues to work in the hearts of young people, including through new modalities that bring Christian life closer, unite and animate.
